The Demographics of Roller Derby

Have you ever wondered what derby girls do when they are not hitting each other on the track? I mean besides hanging out socially with other derby people; or hitting the gym to strengthen their muscles for derby…

Shortly after joining RVRG, as I learned more about my teammates, I noticed that a number of them seemed to be in “helping” professions. Social work, nursing, recreation therapy like myself, teachers, and so on. I thought this was a really interesting dichotomy. We were spending our days nurturing and helping others; and our evenings hitting each other on the track! This spurned on the question of what type of people play roller derby? The answer wasn’t as simple as you might think.

To gain further insight, I decided to survey the league and find out what kinds of trends were actually at play. For simplicity’s sake, the survey had only five questions:

1. Age?
2. Do you have kids?
3. Profession?
4. What part of town do you live in?
5. Previous sport experience?

And to avoid bias, I borrowed my list of professions from the job search site Monster.ca.

So what were the results? I did confirm that a good portion of us work in the health profession, and an even larger number of our members are in education or training jobs, but our largest group hold creative/design jobs. The remaining of RVRG members were divided into administration jobs, writing/editorial jobs, students, and so on.

Those with kids and without were split fairly evenly, with a higher number of those without. As I’d expected, a large majority of members live in Central Ottawa, with the rest of us scattered throughout Ottawa and even coming from outside of Ottawa. Our age range was also pretty much as I’d expected. Most members are in their early 30’s, and our numbers taper off below and above this range.

Three quarters of the survey respondents indicated they had played a team sport and/or an individual sport. Some had played a contact sport before, and even fewer had played a skating sport before. However, about a quarter had not played a sport before. This is the most surprising thing I found; that a number of us came to roller derby with little to no previous sport experience.  As someone who starting playing sports as a child and never stopped, choosing more aggressive sports as I progressed, I find this really interesting. Is it that no other sport really held interest until these members found derby? Is it just that the timing was finally right? Whatever the reason, you have to admit it’s pretty awesome that derby is their first sport.

All this data demonstrates that roller derby is not just for one kind of person. We are mothers, students, social workers, welders, artists, translators, designers, mortgage brokers. We have come to this sport from a variety of backgrounds, and with different levels of experience. We vary in age and what part of town we chose to call home. But we all were drawn to derby and as a result became friends, and I know I’m not alone in saying that this has made my life richer than I ever expected.

Announcing the 2014 RVRG Home Team Draft

This is an open invitation to female derby skaters in the National Capital Region to join the Rideau Valley Roller Girls as we embark on a season where — for the first time — the teams will be determined by a league wide Home Team Draft.

On December 7th, 2013 RVRG will hold its 2014 Home Team Tryouts/Evaluation — this will culminate in the first ever Home Team DRAFT.  To be eligible for selection you must begin the transfer process before November 11th and complete your transfer before November 23rd. We’ll conduct WFTDA minimum skills assessments in group settings (our insurance requires that you pass minimum skills under our evaluation), and you’ll join us at league practice. On Saturday December 7th from 8:00 pm-10:00 pm the home team coaches from all 3 teams will be evaluating a league practice. The practice will consist of both a skills portion and a scrimmage to allow the coaching committee to casually observe everyone working together on the track.

At RVRG, we care about attendance and attitude most of all. We have skaters of varying skills sets, a pool of non-team skaters called Murder Dolls and we pride ourselves on our excellent training program.

The 2014 Home Team Draft will be selected in private by the coaching staff of all 3 RVRG Home Teams. The team selections will be announced at an awesome Draft Announcement Party as a celebration of the upcoming season. The players will be announced in WFTDA roster numbering order and will not reflect the selection order. With the addition of the 3rd home team and the reshuffling of current team players, there are more spots on home teams than ever before. Now is definitely the time to transfer to RVRG if you were ever considering it.
